The story of 2016

December 31, 2016

I wasn’t sure if I was ever going to come back to this space but after a lot of time debating I finally decided that it was time. I loved blogging for a long time but in 2016 I took on way too much and my blog took a back seat. Far back. Like the back of the bus back. I should have known when I woke up on January 1st with Norwalk that 2016 was going to be lousy. But even then I couldn’t predict just how lousy it was going to be. Ten days into 2016 we lost my grandmother. Almost exactly 6 months after we lost my grandfather. I spent the majority of 2016 trying to throw myself into everything I could to keep myself distracted and somewhere along the way I lost sight of what was actually important to me. But thats in the past right? 2017 is a few hours away and I’m choosing to focus on the great things that happened in 2016…

The Highlights:
  • In 2015 I purchased my first house but it wasn’t until 2016 that I moved into my own house and made it a home.
  • We launched Our Crater and the first year has been a definite success.
  • We hosted our first Our Crater event and it was crazy! It turned out better than we could have imagined and we are in the process of planning our second party.
  • I joined the YPA Sudbury Board as the Director of Marketing and Digital Strategy.
  • I was the Maker-in-residence at the Greater Sudbury Public Library and I got to teach some pretty great craft workshops. I’ve also been working on a community weave and it’s been a lot of fun.
  • I participated in my first (and then my second) craft market.
  • I figured out how to adult (sort of) and pay all of my bills all by myself. This isn’t a fun highlight but still a highlight because HEY – I’m a real adult now!
Although all of this was really great, it definitely kept my busy and I didn’t have as much time as I would like to work on my own projects or even set up my house. I’ve lived here for almost a year and it still doesn’t totally feel like home. I have doors un hung, light fixtures missing and not a thing on any of my walls.

Every December 31st I am excited for the start of the new year but this year is definitley the most excited I have ever been. I have finally figured it out. Instead of making a long list of resolutions that I am unlikely to follow through with I’m making ONE – more time for Emily. I’ve made a list of all of the things I wanted to do in 2016 but never had the time for and this year I’m going to knock off as many as I can. If I were to participate in Ali Edwards one little word challenge – mine would be No. Does that count? This year I’m saying no to the things I don’t want to do, the things I feel obligated to say yes to but get no joy from and instead saying YES to the things that I want to do.

Plans for 2017:

  • To focus on myself. Spend more time doing what makes me happy. Setting a goal to have at least one uninterrupted hour a week for me.
  • Finish my house. Hang those doors, lights and pictures.
  • Travel. I put all of my travel plans on hold for 2016 and I’m going stir crazy. In 2017 I plan to go on at least two big trips and a bunch of mini weekend get aways. Because in 2016 I think I left Sudbury a total of 4 times and all of those were to Toronto.
  • Create more.

Tonight I’m celebrating New Year’s Eve with a few of my favourite people and I could not be more excited to see what 2017 has in store!
